Chapman mouths expletive at Schmitt after Giants fielding error
San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman appeared to mouth "Catch the f---ing ball" to first baseman Casey Schmitt after Schmitt dropped Chapman's throw on a grounder in the fifth inning against the San Diego Padres. The error allowed a runner from third to score as the Padres extended their lead to 2-0 in a 7-1 victory on April 1, 2026, at Petco Park. Both players were charged with errors in the game.
Chapman had fielded a chopper from Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts with an off-balance throw that sailed high but remained catchable. The Giants gathered on the mound afterward to regroup. Earlier, Chapman threw out Fernando Tatis Jr. at home plate in the third inning on a grounder.
The loss dropped the Giants to 2-4 early in the 2026 season amid a rough start. Chapman went 0-for-4 at the plate, while Schmitt finished 0-for-3.
Chapman and Schmitt spoke after the game and cleared the air. "We're all brothers here. It's the heat of the moment," Chapman said. Schmitt added, "That's my guy. ... I should have caught the ball. We're good."
