A house fire in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, on October 5, 2024, claimed the lives of Jessi Pierce, a 37-year-old reporter who covered the NHL's Minnesota Wild, and her three children.[1][2]
The White Bear Lake Fire Department stated on October 7 that early investigative findings showed no evidence the blaze was set intentionally, though the cause remains under investigation with assistance from the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office.[2][3]
Pierce's children—Hudson, 8; Cayden, 6; and Avery, 4—were found deceased in the single-family home, where flames were reported coming through the roof early that Saturday morning.[1][2] Her husband, Mike Hinrichs, was out of town on a work trip at the time.[1]
Pierce had covered the Minnesota Wild for NHL.com over the past decade, contributing reports since the 2014-15 season; her work also appeared in The Athletic, Minnesota Hockey Journal and other outlets.[1][4]
Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin described Pierce as a "ray of sunshine" and expressed devastation over the loss, emphasizing unity in the hockey community.[1][4]
"We are in the very early stages of the investigation," the fire department said, adding that all resources are being dedicated and further details will follow upon completion.[3]
