Gauff defends natural hair in TikTok clapback after hiatus
Coco Gauff ended her month-long social media break with an eight-minute TikTok video earlier this week, responding to criticism of her natural hair in a new Miu Miu advertisement. The American tennis star detailed the photoshoot process, explaining she avoided slicking back her hair to protect it. She addressed thousands of negative comments about her appearance, refusing to apologize for her 4C hair texture.
Gauff shared that she chose minimal makeup to match the brand's aesthetic and connect with fans. She encouraged young Black girls with kinky hair to embrace their natural look or experiment freely, stating, "Do what you want to do with your hair," and that both minimal styles and more elaborate ones are beautiful. She acknowledged the criticism initially affected her, saying, "Y'all did knock a diva down," but added she felt better than ever and aimed to uplift those insecure about their looks.
The 2023 U.S. Open champion used the platform to affirm representation, noting her hair was suitable for a high-fashion brand like Miu Miu. Gauff attributed harsh comments on natural appearances to the critics' own insecurities.
Gauff will defend her French Open title beginning May 19.
